What Makes Laurier Students Swipe Left on Love?

What personality trait sets off alarms in the minds of Laurier Students looking for love to ultimately swipe left?

When it comes to dating, Laurier students aren’t shy about what makes them swipe left. From quirky habits to major turn-offs, red flags are trending as a hot topic on campus — and the debates are just as fiery as a late-night rant about group projects. Curious about what puts them off? We’ve rounded up the top five red flags that make Laurier students hit the brakes on love.

5. Clinginess: Love Overload

While affection is sweet, suffocation isn’t.  Students agree that independence is a must in any relationship. “I once dated someone who needed to know where I was 24/7,” shares Amara Istrefi, a third-year Business Technology Management student. “It got suffocating real fast.” Constant texting, endless check-ins and needing nonstop reassurance aren’t cute — they’re overwhelming. Laurier students are looking for balance, not babysitting.

4. Vaping: Puff, Puff, Pass (On You)

The sleek design and colourful clouds might seem cool to the people doing it, but vaping is a no-go for many. “It’s not just the health risks,” explains Vikram Singh, a third-year BA student. “It’s the constant puffing and that lingering smell. It’s a vibe-killer.” For students seeking maturity and healthy habits, vaping can feel more like a red flag than a flex.

3. Lack of Ambition: No Goals? No Thanks.

Aiming high is the norm at Laurier, and students want partners who are just as driven. “It’s not about already having it all figured out,” says Priya Khan, a second-year sociology student. “It’s about showing effort and working toward something.” A lack of ambition screams laziness and lack of direction — two things that make students swipe left faster than you can say “goal-oriented.”

2. Bad Hygiene: Basic Care, Big Deal

Cleanliness might seem like a given, but for Laurier students, it’s non-negotiable. “If you can’t take care of yourself, how are you going to manage a relationship?” asks Subaha Aziza, a first-year criminology student. Whether it’s unbrushed teeth, body odour or dirty nails, bad hygiene sends a clear message: no self-respect, no second date.

1. Mama’s Boys: Independence is Attractive

While family ties are great, excessive dependence on mom? Not so much. “If someone’s mom is still making their doctor’s appointments or picking their clothes, that’s a huge red flag,” says Alex Ventura, a first-year Business Technology Management student. Being family-oriented is endearing, but there’s a fine line between respecting your parents and letting them run your life.

Why These Red Flags Matter

Laurier students seek relationships that are based around respect, independence and shared goals. Red flags like bad hygiene, vaping or clinginess suggest immaturity or a lack of self-care. These aren’t just pet peeves—they’re dealbreakers that speak volumes about compatibility and long-term potential.

So, if you’re trying to win over a Laurier student, ditch the vape, brush your teeth and maybe give your mom a bit of space. A little self-awareness and effort go a long way toward turning sparks into lasting flames.
