“Dude, I’m telling you, it’s gotta be like some kinda money laundering scheme or something,.” Will said, before crunching on a chip.
Oscar wasn’t as fast of an eater; he was still working on his sub. He took another bite and looked over at the sauna’s storefront. They were parked right in front of it like usual, staring into blacked out windows.
“Maybe we just never come by when they’re busy. It’s a sauna, they can only let so many people in and those people stay for a while,.” Oscar pointed out, but it was weird to him too. They always came to the sub shop here on their break, and, despite the sauna having a sign near the door that said they were open, neither him nor Will had ever seen anyone step foot inside … or out.
“I don’t know, dude, it’s just … weird. Wouldn’t fall be like the perfect time to go?”
Oscar nodded along, but continued eating. If the place was really money laundering, they wouldn’t be the people to bust them. He preferred his boring life; he didn’t want anyone after him.
“Are you finished? I can throw it away for you.” Will offered, then took both their wrappers and the chip bag outside. The closest garbage can was more in front of the sub shop. Oscar watched him walk away, but a glint caught his eye and turned his gaze back to the sauna. Someone was actually going inside.
A tall, burly man holding a briefcase opened the sauna’s door and, after glancing to each side, disappeared behind the glass.
Will returned to the car a couple minutes later, looking at him funny.
“Oscar, you look like you’ve seen a ghost. What happened in the short time I was gone?” Will asked with a laugh.
Oscar just shook his head. “I think maybe you’re right.”
At first Will thought he was joking, then he was mad at himself for missing it. “We have to go in there, judge it for ourselves.” He said, slapping the dashboard before getting out of the car. Oscar had no choice but to get out too.
“We have to go back to work soon, what are you doing?” He hissed, but Will wasn’t listening. He entered the sauna, and Oscar reluctantly followed.
“How can I help you?” A gravelly woman’s voice called from behind the front desk. When Oscar met her green eyes, he could’ve sworn her pupils were slits.
“We’d like to book a session.”
While Will spoke to the lady, Oscar glanced around. It seemed like a normal business; if this was a front, it was convincing. The briefcase that man had been holding sat in a cubby, if it held money, he doubted they’d leave it there. He noticed something was holding one of the sauna room doors slightly ajar though, something scaly and red the closer he got to it.
Curiosity got the better of him, so he peeked inside the room. Oscar’s heart sank at the sight, and he tried not to scream. A real, breathing dragon laid on the room’s bench, its tail caught in the door.
“Gotta go back to work,.” Oscar said as he grabbed Will and rushed them back to the car. “I never want a sub again.”
