Where students can go to succeed in their studies this school year
Kristin Kinzie – It’s the beginning of first year in university, and students are faced with a new campus. Students might ask themselves: “Where am I going to study?” Wilfrid Laurier University’s Brantford campus offers a variety of places that will provide you with the perfect study space. Some students need busier areas to aid in their studying, while others require a much quieter space.
As one is becoming more familiar with the Brantford campus, look around, talk to others about their favourite spots! Below, are the top 5 study spaces on the Brantford campus, according to its current students.
#5
The Belmont
In spot number five is the Belmont, a cozy and relaxing coffee shop located in One Market. “A perfect space for a quick coffee and study break, with some delicious food!” says Leen Alhamw, a second-year criminology student. You can find the Belmont at the front entrance of the One Market building.
#4
Brantford Public Library
In fourth place, is the Brantford Public Library, located right beside Grand River Hall. While it is open to the public, many Laurier students make use of its quiet spaces. “[The Brantford Public Library] has the option to book private study rooms, allowing for a very quiet and private environment with limited distractions!” Sierra Beckley, a second-year youth and children’s studies student said.
#3
The Research and Academic Centre
The bronze medallist of study spaces is the Research and Academic Centre (RAC), which offers a variety of study spaces. “[The RAC is a] quiet zone to study in, that’s close to many of my courses,” Leen Alhamwi said. At the RAC, you will also find the Golden Grounds Coffee House with the added bonus of being connected to the Hawk Shop. While the building is large, if you do some exploring, you will find many quiet study zones!
#2
The Basement of Grand River Hall
For our silver medallist of study spaces, we have the Grand River Hall basement, a large space that accommodates both solo and group study sessions. “[The Grand River Hall basement] is a space perfect for individual studying and group studying, as it has various rooms with whiteboards!” Ghina Dandach, a second-year criminology major said.
#1
Student Learning Commons
Finally, for the final gold medallist and number one study space, is the Student Learning Commons, which is also located in the One Market. It’s a popular location for Laurier Brantford students seeking a balance of quiet and collaboration. “[The Student Learning Commons] is the perfect space for a group or an individual to work in because it’s a quiet—but not too quiet—area and best of all, it has close access to our academic advising centre, and other student supports!” Loveon Burford, a second-year child and youth studies major said. A very core area for the Laurier student body.
Although these might not be the ultimate rankings for everyone, they are a strong starting point for any Laurier Brantford student looking to find their ideal study space. Do not be afraid to explore campus because your perfect spot is probably just around the corner!
