In the third season of The Orbit, The Sputnik Editor-in-Chief Alexa Ford sits down and has conversations with sources, writers and alumni. The Orbit is posted monthly and airs live on Radio Laurier Station

Episode 2 — Facebook bans, blocked messages and disabled accounts: Oh My!

In this month’s episode of the orbit, Editor-in-Chief, Alexa Ford sits down and has a conversation with The Sputnik’s News Editor, Piper Force. The two discuss Piper’s recent run in with the law; Canadian online news law that is! Listen to Bill C-18’s negative repercussions on journalists and how Piper handled her account getting banned! What does this relatively new law mean for budding journalists finishing up their studies? Listen to hear their thoughts!  

Episode 1 — Laurier Brantford Campus: Accessible for all

In the first episode of the season, Editor-in-Chief, Alexa Ford is joined by 3rd year student Alanah Legget to discuss accessibility issues on the Brantford Campus. As a student with a physical disability, Legget and many other students with disabilities face a distinct set of challenges while navigating the campus. What does Laurier intend to do about it? Listen for the answers.

In each episode of the new season, The Sputnik Editor-in-Chief Umaymah Suhail speaks with a team member about their work published in the new monthly issue. Episodes air on Radio Laurier Station, Fridays at 3 p.m. EST.

Episode 8, Season 2

Sept. 13, 2024 — In the very last episode of this season, Umaymah Suhail speaks with Lead Arts and Culture Writer Sienna Bilancia about her article, “Brantford women are in business,” from the final issue of the year published in April. The two wrap up the season finale with a conversation about the local community and journalism today.

Sept. 11, 2024 — In this episode, Umaymah Suhail talks about everything sports and journalism with Lead Sports Writer Mitchell Hartman, who wrote a piece called “Kansas City Chiefs win Super Bowl LVIII” for the March Springtime issue. 

Episode 6, Season 2

Sept. 11, 2024 — Umaymah Suhail and The Sputnik’s Infinitum Editor Tusharika Tyagi jump into an inspiring conversation about her short story “The dead don’t want to be held” published in the Valentine’s Day issue back in February, along with other multimedia projects, workshops and events the fiction section hosted throughout the month.

Jan. 26, 2024 — In the first episode of the new year, Umaymah Suhail sits down with Opinion Editor Mitchell Baldwin to delve into the behind-the-scenes of his feature in the January issue, “Building Brantford better.”

Dec. 22, 2023 — In the episode right before the holidays, Umaymah Suhail discusses the law with Lead Opinion Writer Jada Phillips as they take a look at her article, “Who is the ‘reasonable person’ anyway?”
