Senate Pulls Motion

Following an uproar from the student body and a petition signed by approximately 1300 students, Laurier President Dr. Max Blouw pulled a motion concerning fall reading days off the table at a Senate meeting in Brantford last week.

The motion, which would have added two reading days in the third week of October, was fought vehemently by a number of students, concerned over the risk of shortening Orientation Week should the motion go through.

First reported in The Cord, the debate erupted over social media platforms and carried on into the meeting last week. A busload of Waterloo students attended the meeting, where they provided sound evidence dismissing the research from other universities that the reading days were helpful.

With the motion pulled off the table, it looks like O-Week is set to stay in its entirety.

Laurier Appoints New Chancellor

Wilfrid Laurier University has appointed a new chancellor, as Jamaican-Canadian Michael Lee-Chin will step into the role previously filled by John Pollock.

Often described as one of Canada’s most successful entrepreneurs, Lee-Chin created an Ontario-based firm known as AIC Limited, which in 2009 was bought by Manulife Financial with more than $15 billion in assets.

Lee-Chin has been awarded the Order of Jamaica, Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Youth Business Foundation. Lee-Chin is also a member of the board for The Trust for the Americas, a foundation affiliated with the Organization of American States.

Lee-Chin will take over his new role on Friday.
