Laurier Brantford’s dodgeball team claimed second place in their first tournament of the year.
The team hosted the tournament on Friday, Oct. 27 at the Rise Centre in Brantford, Ont.
It was Humber Lakeshore that defeated the Golden Hawks 5-2 in the final match with four Humber players left on the court.
“The team was amazing, everyone played their hearts out and you could tell we left it all on the court,” said the one of the Golden Hawks’ team captains, Matt Coomber, despite the loss.
The Golden Hawks competed in the tournament with just seven players, three of them being brand new to the team.
“All of our returning players showed amazing leadership and perseverance on the court while our new players exceeded any and all expectations, proving hard work and determination pay off,” said head coach Meg Elmhirst.
The four teams in the tournament were Laurier Brantford, Humber Lakeshore, Humber North and George Brown.
“When the competition was tough we stayed positive and focused on one target at a time,” said Elmhirst.
Elmhirst says the other three teams are likely to be the toughest competition the Golden Hawks will have to face this year.
“Seeing as this was our first tournament as a team I have very high hopes for the rest of the year,” said Coomber.
The Golden Hawks compete again in less than two weeks on November 10 at Humber Lakeshore.
