For the new school year, Laurier recently announced the addition of two new teams that will compete in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA).
Beginning in September, a men’s and women’s cross country team will compete in a series of tournaments before a provincial tournament near the end of the semester. Men’s indoor soccer will begin to compete in tournaments starting in January. The soccer team will end their season in a regional tournament to attempt to qualify for a provincial final.
The first coach of the cross country team will be Cory Currie. Currie has been a coach at the Brantford Track and Field Club since 2009. In this time, he has helped 11 athletes earn athletic scholarships to either the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
The men’s soccer team will announce a coach closer to the beginning of their season.
Both teams are part of the growing athletics program at Laurier Brantford. The growth is tied to the completion of the Laurier-YMCA complex. Once complete there are plans to add more teams as Laurier Brantford will increase participation in the OCAA.
Along with new teams, Laurier will also be hosting a fourth tournament this season. Women’s basketball has been added to the schedule on November 25. The tournament joins the co-ed dodgeball and the men’s and women’s hockey tournaments that were hosted last year.
Laurier will also have extramural teams competing in co-ed volleyball and soccer as well as men’s basketball. Information about tryouts will be released at a later date. All teams are expected to compete in multiple tournaments throughout the school year.
